Publisher Marketing: Located on the floodplain of the Upper St. Johns River Basin in Brevard County in east-central Florida in Titusville, St. Johns National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is managed as a satellite refuge of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex (Figure 1). St. Johns NWR is managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) as part of the National Wildlife Refuge System, which includes more than 550 national wildlife refuges and related units and over 150 million acres. The refuge is unstaffed and is composed of two management units: the 2,016-acre Bee Line Unit (Figure 2), and the 4,241-acre State Road (SR) 50 Unit, which includes the 31-acre Fox Lake Tract. At the SR 50 Unit (Figure 3), the Service manages most of the lands and waters within the acquisition boundary. However, this is not the case at the Bee Line Unit (Figure 4), where a number of tracts are privately held. Those properties of the Bee Line Unit that are not part of the larger contiguous portion (which are generally located to the south of the main portion of this unit) are commonly referred to as the Checkerboard and total roughly 1,116 acres (Figure 5), where the Service owns and manages roughly 507 acres. St. Johns NWR's management boundary represents 6,257 acres while the its approved acquisition boundary represents 6,757 acres.
