Rog Beagle is an ardent ex-cop, now working as a private detective, in a world where humans, dogs and cats live as though they are all the same species. The Silver Herring, sees him uncover a plot full of deception, vivid characters and high tension with a bout of uncompromising cynicism. While stymied on one case, Rog is hired by the obnoxious Miss Francine Mayweather to retrieve her stolen silk and gold shawl. As he unravels both mysteries, Rog has to deal with the pernicious Hans, a nosy and violent O'Reilly and a swathe of troublesome murders.
