When four-year-old, fatherless Matthew sees a dragon at his window, he screams for his mother, but instead of being comforted, he is horrified to find she has disappeared. Matthew and his sixteen-year-old sister, Jessica, must find a way to reunite their family. Matthew and Jessica struggle to survive on their own and keep their desperate situation a secret. Then, one night, a dragon captures Matthew. He is rescued by a huge eagle and flown to a far-off, mystical land where he begins the transformation into an eighteen-year-old boy. A half-beaver, half-man named Eliazer finds Matthew and teaches him to protect himself.
