Tono-Bungay is a semi-autobiographical novel by H. G. Wells It has been called "arguably his most artistic book." It is narrated by George Ponderevo, who is persuaded by his uncle to help develop the business of selling Tono-Bungay, a patent medicine created by his uncle. George devotes seven years to organizing the production and manufacture of a product which he believes to be "a damned swindle." He quits day-to-day involvement with the enterprise in favor of aeronautics and eventually finds his way to a new occupation: designing destroyers for the highest bidder.
