At a certain enterprise management showed up early Friday morning and told 200 employees their services were no longer needed. "Oh, sorry that your retirement plan will be screwed up. Oh, you didn't get vested, and I'm sorry about a few other things. And, you know, your pay stops immediately. Sorry I didn't get to notify you in advance and give you six months to plan it out." Not that most people would have prepared, because historically even in situations in which people have been notified, they didn't. That's just one example; if you want to get big numbers, then you've got the manufacturers, financial institutions, great appliance companies, computer firms, airlines and oil industries that lay off 10,000 or 20,000 at a time. In my empowerment coaching, the biggest thing I run against is the cry for security; the need for benefits. Why don't you ask these suddenly unemployed ("laid off" is a more hopeful word, because it implies...) individuals about "security". That security is an illusion. It's something they sold you on, and something you have bought into! You can undo it! You know,insurance doesn't cost very much. Getting ahead doesn't cost that much. But you know what? Selling your soul for security doesn't offer any security, either. Sure, there is risk in everything. The trick is in choosing the right set of risks ? Let the whiners and the wannabes take the risks of the company they work for not needing them any longer, maybe at a crucial time when they don't really feel like going out in the work force again and they're not prepared for retirement. You! Choose the rewards you would like to have, and go after them.
