When Dr. Gentry delivers Julia Gordon's baby girl, severe developmental abnormalities are discovered. A pediatric team, quickly assigned to determine the infant's condition, is led by Dr. Janet Stowe. Dr. Stowe is a well respected pediatrician, and also the wife of the obstetrician who delivered the critically ill newborn - Steven Gentry.

Dr. Stowe is puzzled that her husband did not discover the infant's easily detected abnormalities; although rare, ultrasounds should have exposed severe developmental problems.

The Gordon's child, with no chance of survival, dies only four hours later. Early in their marriage, Janet and Steven, knowing their professional paths would cross, had agreed not to question one another's medical decisions. Janet kept the agreement they had made; but found it difficult as she could not forget the look in Julia and Robert Gordon's eyes when they first observed their infant's deformities.

Six weeks later, Steven arrives home and finds that his wife is missing; her lifeless body is discovered in the woods behind their home the following day. Dr. Gentry, frantic, contacts a good friend, saying it's important that they speak; but when she arrives, Steven is dead - found hanging in his garage.

Julia and Robert Gordon, trying to understand and deal with their daughter's fatal abnormalities, are referred to a Genetics Counselor. While reviewing the Gordon's file, Priscilla Kirkpatrick makes a startling discovery - a discovery that puts her life in danger.

Is the murder of Steven's wife and his suicide connected to Kirkpatrick's discovery? Tension elevates throughout the entire area as detectives and the FBI learn of the information Kirkpatrick has uncovered.
