Winchester being regarded as the origin and fountain head of the great system of Public School education, a considerable, though not, it is hoped, an undue amount of, space has been given to the ascertainment of its true place in the history of English education, and its relations to prior schools in general and those of Winchester in particular. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
