Canada's Ukrainians: Negotiating an Identity
Lubomyr Luciuk
Publisher Marketing: The first Ukrainian settlers came to Canada one hundred years ago. Today the Ukrainian-Canadian community holds a distinct place in the cultural mosaic. To celebrate its centennial, this collection of essays presents an overview of the community's experience from the earliest period of settlement to the present. The volume brings together the work of a number of scholars in history, politics and geography. The first group of essays deals with demography and settlement, including the impact of various immigration and refugee policies. A second group focuses on relations between the community and the state, including political activism among various groups within the community, and the internment of Ukrainian Canadians during the First World War. A third section considers dynamics within the Ukrainian-Canadian community, including issues of religion, gender, and cultural development. Contributor Bio: Hryniuk, Stella Stella Hryniuk is associate professor in the Departments of History and Slavic Studies, University of Manitoba.
