Libby Emerson moved east from Montana many years ago, started a family, and married a young lawyer. Libby was only 32 when her husband was killed in a freak accident. She and her 10 year old son decide to return to Montana planning to reopen the tourist resort which she technically owns. However, it has been closed for many years since the death of her father. Libby discovers deplorable conditions and more work than she has bargained for, but finds that her young son is a strong and willing ally in their family venture. She also befriends an eligible deputy sheriff. Gordon Taylor slips inevitably deeper and deeper into her life. When the disastrous fire season of 2000 looms, Libby and her son set into motion plans to survive this catastrophe.
