He could give logical reasons for turning to gambling. He talked about analgesics and endorphins. He evolved into an expert on scientific psychobabble. He understood and lamented that gambling distracted him from his real problems. Corky clung to memories and hated his weakness. Gambling grew into the hideous mask, which bound his other problems.
