His father, Frank, once a national best-selling author, is stuck in a period of extensive writer's block, along with a lingering depression that has festered in his mind from his wife's tragic death, and seems unable and unwilling to be the father that his son so desperately needs. Struggling to overcome a growing drug addiction that he keeps hidden from his friends, Ethan attempts to find himself among the wreckage of his own life, shifting through the heavy shards of his mother's death, his "uncles" behavior, and his growing sense of isolation and alienation from the world around him. When a mysterious angel dressed in black appears in his dreams and reveals to him disturbing and serial images, Ethan battles within himself as to whether the angel is real or imaginary, good or evil. His decision leads him down a spiraling staircase that puts him in the middle of the struggle between light and darkness that rages inside all human nature.
