A double tragedy in a young teenager's life, her brother sent to prison and her parents dead in an accident, bring her pampered life-style to a crashing end. With luxury only a memory, an Aunt and Uncle raise her on a small hand-to-mouth farm. Escape fills her thoughts. She plots to marry a neighbor's son to make her escape. Not long after the marriage, a death in his family forces them to return to the farm adjoining that of her uncle's. The intervention and hardship of World War II bring new problems. Her life, never easy, becomes a continual series of challenges, but with each blow, she grows in character, confidence and ability. Ultimately she becomes a woman to admire and respect.
