How often have teachers gotten students in the upper grades and they didn't have early writing skills? How many times have teachers not known where to start teaching students to write from where they are? As educators, we only teach students the 5-step writing process instead of teaching them "how" to write. It's important that children learn early that stories have a beginning, middle, and ending. Young children should know they are writing even when they are scribbling.
