The Sand Castle Louise Taylor-streu
The Sand Castle
Louise Taylor-streu
It all started innocently enough. I had dreamed of living on a lake in the north woods since I was a young girl in Michigan. Only after our family was grown and educated did we feel we could consider such a project. We went about building our beautiful retirement home in the deep woods of northern Wisconsin, only sixty miles south of Lake Superior. Construction went quite well in spite of several delays. Once we moved in and got settled, things took a slight change and unexpected events caused us to question our decision. I had always considered myself a sort of pioneer who loved the outdoors, but living our new lives up north presented a whole new environment and culture. Nature, in all it's glory, descended upon us in ways we had never anticipated back home around the big city. The Chicago area, where we had spent forty years, had not prepared us for the next ten years when we would be tested again and again.
