One of the proverbial questions inevitably asked by youngsters is "What was life like back then?" meaning the past. It's like the present cannot be separated from the past as the future looms. At some time shared moment, stories evolve to answer the question or questions. The narrative ensues by relating the past and confirming the curiosities heard or imagined. It's like embarking upon a journey. There is a beginning and what is anticipated unfolds with memorable impressions. When J'Nita, one of the main characters, hears about her ancestors through reading of a journal left by her grandmother, she literally yearns to live through the lives of her ancestors. For many, ancestry runs deep and wide, and can cover a span of centuries. In J'Nita's Family Tree, the characters find a way to connect the wide gulf of time. Thus, their story does not end at the last page of the journal, but farther and beyond what their imaginations have envisioned.
