Captain Holschuh was born with a near fatal birth defect. His parents stepped out on faith and scheduled him for a new and untested operation, involving slicing open his abdomen, cutting the enlarged muscles squeezing the pyloric valve, and letting food flow through to the duodenum to be digested. Ten years later, his father died of Tuberculosis leaving him and his mother alone in a big house in Orange County, NY. After graduating from high school. he enrolled in Westminste College in New Wilmington, PA, where he met an attractive brunette named Helen Stafford. Their courtship was interrupted when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harboron December 7, 1941. As a young ensign, he served aboard an attack transport in the Pacific and was scheduled to take part in the suicidal amphibious landing on southern Japan. Two atomic bombs ended the war, saving his life. Howdy married Helen July 20,1946, received his Masters Degree in Journalism from Stanford University, and began a civilian career writing news broadcasts for radio stations KNBC and KGO in San Francisco. War again interrupted their plans, when the Communists invaded South Korea. LT Holschuh was recalled to active duty at the Naval Intelligence School in Washington, first as a student then as a member of the faculty. A long series of intelligence assignments took the Holschuh family overseas to Trinidad, Hawaii, and Germany, with intervening duties in the Pentagon.
