The book questions why our government is willing to put tens of thousands of our young men and women in harms way in a questionable effort to bring democracy to Iraq while at the very same time denying democracy to the nearly four million American citizens of Puerto Rico. The book identifies and debunks ten political myths that are shamelessly promoted by the powers that be to keep the island's colonial subordination in place. After over 100 years of colonial rule it is high time the United States practiced at home what it preaches abroad. This is not some abstract, political issue. To millions of Puerto Ricans this is about the future of their families, their children, we are talking about. It is also about the very essence of American democracy. Does the USA as a nation truly believe in 'liberty and justice' for all its citizens or is this just another empty political phrase? If Puerto Ricans are American enough to fight and die in war torn Baghdad why aren't they American enough to be treated as first class citizens? Only time will tell when the hypocrisy will end.
