It is 1933. The great Depression is having a devastating effect on many thousands of families across the country. The fact that the Asa Bruce family live in a beautiful house in Shaughnessy Heights, Vancouver's finest residential neighborhood, does not exempt them from its effect.

Asa Bruce, the head of the family, has been holding together his little financial empire precariously, hoping that something would break. The banks, however, refuse accommodation.

This novel draws a vivid portrait of each member of the family; Asa himself, wife Martha, son Struan, daughters Fiona and Arleigh, and martha's sister Augusta who has been living with them for twenty-five years.

Its denouement reveals how each reacts to a serious crisis in their lives.
