Making It Happen is a teenage novel about three urban high school students from Washington, DC. The story begins with strong details of Renee's struggles to overcome harsh family issues and her incredible ability, to maintain her grades as a senior on the honor roll. Her elderly grandfather raised her and made sure that she had an understanding of his expectations about how important it was for them to respect and communicate with each other daily. Renee' has two close friends who are doing quite well in school as well, Vicki and Shawny. Unlike Renee' the two girls have their parents in their lives. Though different yet quite the same, Vicki's parents are her big brother and their Auntie. (They were the ones who raised her) Her parents were drug addicts. She constantly witnessed her filthy dope fiend parents, scheming their way through several drug-stripes throughout the neighborhoods where she hung out and from time to time, she'd say a couple of jokes about them or to them as she passed them by. Shawny on the other hand, her parent were high school sweetheart who grew up in the dangerous area of south-east DC together, graduated college, got married, had a child and moved themselves into a nice sub urban home on the outskirt of DC. They wanted a better life for their child but just as teens are today. She knew what was best for her, (so she thought). This novel is a page-turner. It's touching. You will laugh, cry and learn the values of being a better family member after reading it. Making It Happen will give teens something to think about if they are involved with dealing drugs, having unprotected sex, and most importantly, it will encourage them to gain respect for adults as well as obtain the ability to have great judgment and most of all self-respect.
