Originally published in 1899, this set offers a cornucopia of fascinating historical information. At the time the Dutch came to North America, they were the foremost commercial people in the world.

Volume I offers a glimpse of medieval Netherlands' history. The adventures of Hudson area explorers, including Giovanni da Verrazano and Henry Hudson, the West India Company and its charter of "Privileges and Exemptions" (1629), Peter Stuyvesant, and interaction with Algonquin, Iroquois and Mohawk tribes are among the many topics offered.

Volume II covers the peaceful transfer of New Netherlands to English rule, 1680 New York, Penn's Holy Experiment, the downfall of the Stuarts, Knickerbocker Society, the Quaker Commonwealth and much more.

John Fiske (1842-1901) was a Harvard lecturer and Professor of US history at Washington University in Saint Louis. He was the chief popularizer of Victorian science and philosophy in the USA in his day.
