Edith Anna Oenone Somerville (1858-1949) was an Irish novelist, artist and illustrator. In 1886, she first met her cousin, Violet Florence Martin (alias Martin Ross) (1862-1915), and under the pseudonym "Somerville and Ross", they formed one of Ireland's most celebrated and successful literary partnerships. Their first book, An Irish Cousin, appeared in 1889, and by Martin's death in 1915 they had published 14 titles together. Somerville continued to write and publish as Somerville and Ross despite Martin's untimely death, believing that, through spiritual seances, the two remained in contact.
