Understanding Landscape Values: a Scottish Highland Case Study (British Archaeological Reports British Series)
Camilla Priede
This work takes an inductive approach to understanding the values that people hold for the landscapes of the Socttish Highlands. In addition to describing these values, the influences on them are discussed. This is undertaken with reference to fieldwork in the Scottish Central Highlands in two case study areas: Lochtayside and Lochlomondside. The research suggests that the way that people value landscape is a product of their identity and the temporaral and cultural contexts of their encounters with the land, and that similarities in landscape values are caused by similarities in identity, rather than any ideas of the land having a 'materiality' which influences values.
