Holberg er blevet kaldt "den danske litteraturs fader." Han var en produktiv og laerd forfatter, der udgav boger om en lang raekke emner. Holberg skrev saledes bade laerde videnskabelige vaerker om historie, geografi og filosofi, foruden nu klassiske skonlitteraere vaerker indenfor genrerne komedier, romaner og poesi. Derudover var han en laerd akademiker af internationalt format, som indforte mange af den tidlige oplysningstids tanker i Danmark-Norge.
