Vol. 1 has an initial leaf entitled 'Proposals for printing by subscription', dated: April 27, 1769; this includes instructions to the binder to discard it. Originally intended to be part of a 20-vol. set collecting Voltaire's works, to be issued by subscription, a volume a month publishing schedule, but, as the 'Advertisement' at end of vol. 2 states, this plan was in trouble due to a lack of subscribers to finance the remaining volumes.
