The situation in the USA has been the subject of intense policy and political debate over the past decades and the papers in this volume provide an important insight from a wide range of analytical perspectives. They provide an insight into the changing dynamics of race and migration in the contemporary environment, combining conceptual analysis with original empirical research. The concerns of this volume address global questions of relevance as well as those specific to the USA. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Biographical Note: Martin Bulmer is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey, UK. He is the author and editor of many books. His research interests cover the methodology of social research, the history of the social sciences, the study of ethnicity and race, the application of sociology to public policy, and the sociology of social care. John Solomos is Professor of Sociology and Head of Department at the University of Warwick, UK. His most recent publications are "Race, Multiculture and Social Policy" (2013, with Alice Bloch and Sarah Neal) and "Theories of Race and Ethnic Relations: Contemporary Debates and Perspectives" (2013, with Karim Murji).

Contributor Bio:  Bulmer, Martin Martin Bulmer is Foundation Fund Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey. He is the editor of Ethnic and Racial Studies, in which he has been involved since 1988. His most recent book is Citizenship Today, edited with Tony Rees (1996) and he is Academic Director of the Question Bank, partof the ESRC Centre for Applied Social Surveys, established in 1995. He has wide experience of editing and publishing in British social science, and previously held a social policy appointment at LSE for 17 years, where he taught the main undergraduate course in race and ethnic relations for manyyears. John Solomos is Professor of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Southampton, before which he was Reader in Public Policy, Birkbeck College, London, and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations, University of Warwick.
