The book presents the fascinating story of Bunche the man within the frame tale of the UN?s initial involvement in Palestine between 1947 and 1949. During those years, the UN had a decisive influence on the history of the country and on the Arab-Israeli conflict. Bunche played an extremely significant role in this, as advisor to UNSCOP (the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine), which investigated the situation and in 1947 recommended the partition of Mandatory Palestine. Subsequently, he headed the secretariat of the UNPC (United Nations Palestine Commission , which was charged with implementing the partition plan, served as the senior aide to the UN mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte, and, after the latter?s assassination, himself became the head of the UN mediation effort. In this position he managed to put an end to the war by means of armistice agreements between Israel and the several Arab states.
