Explorations in Urban and Regional Dynamics: A case study in complexity science - Routledge Advances in Regional Economics, Science and Policy
Dearden, Joel (Swansea University, UK)
This book aims to provide the foundations of a science of cities and regions. The current state of this science is rather fragmented and the objective here is to draw a number of themes together, linked through the power of computer visualisation. The main themes are:
- the use of entropy-maximising spatial interaction models together with an understanding of dynamics by adding space to Lotka-Volterra models;
- the use of the retail model to illustrate the arguments in depth, but building a disaggregated version of a comprehensive model ? the Lowry model ? and adding full dynamics to this;
- an illustration of how a range of additional methods can be brought to bear including agent-based modelling and gaming
- how the methods developed can be applied in other disciplines such as archaeology and history
This kind of comprehensive integration, combined with new models, methods and insights, will provide a new framework for regional science.
