Novel published in 1859, focuses especially on the love relationship of a disparate couple. The emergence, evolution and development of love between a man and a woman is, in short, the theme of the book. How love passes from friendship / paternal or filial love to sexual love - and that Tolstoy does not even touch it explicitly - to loving passion, to the desire to merge into one another, and how from there, through an ordeal of jealousy, tensions, misunderstandings and distortions, drifting slowly towards friendship, again, towards tenderness and the placid and calm affection of maturity. However, Tolstoy makes us see the difference that exists between the man, much older, who goes a little back in life, and the young woman who opens to life like a rose unfolds her petals and perfume.
