In the Arms of Inup
Eve Allen
Eve Mills Allen, a New Brunswick mental health therapist, has written the profoundly moving story of Jeremias, who at the age of 11 led his family to safety during the Guatemalan genocide against the Mayan peoples. Jeremias breaks the silence as he shares his memories with the author Eve Mills Allen over several years, and we learn how inadequate our mental health system is to fully heal those traumatized by war and genocide. We also learn about refugee resilience; Jeremias gives back to immigrant youth through his work with the Multicultural Association of New Brunswick and his human rights activism with Maritime-Guatemala Breaking the Silence. This book tells of the horrors of the genocide and the spiritual and cultural practices that sustain survivors. The author also shares her own experience as counsellor/friend in writing Jeremias's story.
