Born on a plantation in Northern Virginia, all Sully wants to do is sit in his cottage and write the novel that finally explains Southern Exceptional. The Second World War disrupts his plans. Failing a draft physical he joins the Aviation Cadets with the hope of becoming a pilot. He is arbitrarily chosen to be a bombardier and ends up on the Hollis crew. He quickly becomes disillusioned with the the war and his role in it. As Hollis tells the crew to bail out of their fatally stricken bomber, Sully descends into Occupied France and shatters his leg on landing. The Resistance finds him and reluctantly take him in. His fluency in french makes him an asset. His real war is only beginning.
