Marc Notes: A verse satire of Richelieu originally published in 1635;attributed to Charles de Beys, to Louis d'Espinay, comte d'Estelan, and to Jacques Favereau.; Includes bibliographical references. Publisher Marketing: This satirical poem, known popularly as the Miliade because of its thousand-verse length (in octosyllabic verse), was printed anonymously around 1636. The poem's endurance and plentiful and specific political references make it a lively commentary encompassing discontent with the increasingly centralized government before the outbreak of the civil wars, the Frondes (1648-53). Contributor Bio:  Scott, Paul Paul Scott (1920-78) was a British novelist best known for the tetralogy "The Raj Quartet, " published by the University of Chicago Press. Scott was drafted into the British Army during World War II and was stationed in India, an experience which shaped much of his literary work. The University of Chicago Press has also published his novels "Six Days in Marapore" and "Staying On", the latter of which won the Booker Prize for 1977.
