Lord Bolingbroke
Volume I of a four volume set
This first volume of Bolingbroke?s life brings his career down to his flight from impeachment, after the death of Queen Anne.
His life and works, including thoughts on politics, political parties, England, Europe, the King, Government, philosophy, history and its use in education, monotheism, theology and religion, power, freedom, and essays on human knowledge, all in these four volumes.
"Lord Bolingbroke is one restrained by a constitution, and by public opinion. He was called indeed a Tory; but his writings prove him a stronger advocate for liberty than any of his countrymen, the Whigs of the present day. Irritated by his exile, he committed one act unworthy of him, in connecting himself momentarily with a prince rejected by his country. But he redeemed that single act by his establishment of the principles which proved it to be wrong." Thomas Jefferson, January 1821.
Henry Saint John, Lord Bolingbroke, was an English statesman, orator and writer. A Jacobite, he spend much of life in exile and wrote influential political treaties, notably The Idea of a Patriot King (1749).
