Navajo Place Names: an Observer's Guide Alan Wilson
Navajo Place Names: an Observer's Guide
Alan Wilson
It is well known that the Navajo name rocks, trees, creeks, canyons, and, in general, almost every spot. This observer's guide and the collection of the most widely known and used names in Navajo coversations and discourse was compiled and written by Alan Wilson, formerly Professor of Navajo language at the Gallup Branch, University of New Mexico.
The place names in the book are arranged in alphabetical order, non-Navajo names first. The Navajo name is next, followed by a roughly literal translation of the complete Navajo term. Historical notes and location data are provided for each name. The accompanying recording, read by native speakers of Navajo, provides the pronunciation guide and the entire text of place names. The foreword is by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist N. Scott Momaday.
