Jimmy Van Horn gets a visitor in his Austin, Texas, bar late one night. A woman named Vanessa Burnett who is scared to death wants him to protect her from Marcus Patton, against whom she intends to file a complaint for the murder of an accountant named Wendell Phillips.

He tells her he has to talk to his partner and asks her to come back the next night. However, before that date happens, he sees an account on television of her murder. Throw his daughters and a new girlfriend into the mix and Jimmy has to step carefully.
