The breakup of the former Soviet Union is the backdrop of Short Three Thousand, a sharply satirical financial thriller. Andrei Borokov, ace spy for the KGB, is caught in the transition between moral imperatives of the old order and those of the new while he runs for his life and discovers that he is a man without a country.
