Don French is a 48 year-old volunteer firefighter that is burning out. He would love to be a firefighter full-time but can't afford to leave his job with the phone company. He has pursued the American Dream and now feels trapped by it. His nightmares are interrupted by calls. He responds to car accidents and a SIDS baby. These calls add even more stress to his life. Lt. Donovan is the full-timer that tries to keep them all going. A fire grows throughout the novel. The fire wants to be worshipped. It chases a man and his baby through their home. George must attack this fire and save the family trapped inside.
