Jacket Description/Back: First published in 1903, this eloquent collection of essays exposed the magnitude of racism in our society. The book endures today as a classic document of American social and political history: a manifesto that has influenced generations with its transcendent vision for change. Review Quotes: "This is a thoroughly researched, carefully reasoned, and well-integrated introduction and collection of documents. It is far and away the best scholarly introduction to Du Bois's Souls and frames the book's meaning in new and important ways. The introduction is extremely comprehensive and well organized. The treatment of Du Bois's life is accurate and thorough and appears in a 'voice' that will prepare student readers well for Du Bois's elegant and powerful prose."Biographical Note: David W. Blight is associate professor of history and black studies at Amherst College. He is the author of "Frederick Douglass' Civil War: Keeping Faith in Jubilee" (1989) and essays on abolitionism, the Civil War, and American historical memory. He is the editor of the Bedford edition of the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1993). Robert Gooding-Williams is George Lyman Crosby 1896 Professor of Philosophy and professor of black studies at Amherst College. He is the editor of "Reading Rodney King/Reading Urban Uprising" (1993) and the author of essays on Frederick Nietzxche, Du Bois, multiculturalism, and the representation of race in film. Publisher Marketing: "The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line, " wrote W. E. B. Du Bois in The Souls of Black Folk, one of the most prophetic and influential works in American literature. First published in 1903, this eloquent collection of essays exposed the magnitude of racism in our society. The book endures today as a classic document of American social and political history: a manifesto that has influenced generations with its transcendent vision of change. John Edgar Wideman observed: "Like Freud's excavations of the unconscious, Einstein's revelations of the physical universe, Marx's exploration of the economic foundations of social organization, Du Bois's insights have profoundly altered the way we look at ourselves."
