In this book the author examines the many controversial theories and methods of music education which have evolved in the last 30 years and provides a rationale for the variety of musical activities which play an important part in schools today. The first part looks at developments in music teaching, from the theories of the Ancient Greeks to the practices of post-war Britain. The second part focuses on musical styles in history. The third part explores objectives and methods relating to classroom and instrumental teaching - running youth orchestras, teaching ethnic, vocal, and popular music and presenting live music to children. He confronts the difficulties of teachers today who have to cope with ever-decreasing resources, while trying to meet essential priorities.
