Jane Austen out of the Blue
Donald Measham
Towards the end of January 1817 a lady novelist, less well-known then than she is now begins a novel on an unusual subject: the rise of 'Sanditon' as a sea-side resort. She dies with only a quarter of it written. What was going on in the writer's mind? What could have happened in her story next? Sanditon is a place where anyone (real or fictitious) may turn up for the water cure. They do! Karen Joy Fowler, author of 'The Jane Austen Book Club', is an admirer - sees Measham's novel as a 'passionate tribute to Austen' and recommends it 'whole-heartedly'.
