The islands of the South Seas are curiously limited places of interest. The ethnological problem presented by the indigenous is of interest only to men of science, trade is insignificant, there is little real agriculture and no industry. There remains the fascination of living among people whose vision of life is substantially different from ours; to live with a simplicity unrelated to anything in one's experience, in the midst of an environment of unreal beauty both today and in retrospect.
