The Importance of Being Earnest

Set in Victorian England, the plot takes place around the protagonist John (or Jack) and Ernest, his fictional brother. Wilde's previous plays had elevated him to the pinnacle of success, so he was not expecting anything new from the playwright. Back then, the press was fierce in its search for new characters and storylines, paying great attention to detail. To combat it, Wilde baptized the play under the title of Lady Lancing and used names of coastal towns for the main characters and the location of the play (the protagonist's last name, Worthing, is taken from the city where Wilde resided when he wrote the play) . It was the last comedy Wilde wrote and is considered one of his best works. It was first released on February 14, 1895 at the St. James' Theater in London, three months before Wilde was sentenced to prison for serious indecency.
