The Antithesis "Neither Jew nor Greek" in Gal. 3:28a: Its Context, Application, Meaning and Origin
Ayodele Ayeni
In a nutshell, our book shows that: 1) Gal. 3:28 is a formula, 2) the dyad ?neither Jew nor Greek? and corollaries (Gal. 3:28a; 1 Cor. 12:13ba; Col. 3:11a) is the only dyad that Paul develops, 3) the demonstration of Christian identity is the quintessential argument of Gal. 3:28, 4) the meaning of Gal. 3:28 is cumulative: in other words, it is by the assemblage of the different strands of arguments in Gal. 2-3; 1 Cor. 12; Rom. 1-3; 10; Col. 3 that permits one to justify the meaning of Gal. 3:28. In a world wallowing in short memory, Paul proposes the importance of history ? the history of salvation; in a world of broken vows and shattered promises, Paul proposes a faithful God who has a track record of keeping His promises; in a world that doubted its salvation, Paul proposes a free gift of salvation which goes beyond the power and shackles of sin ? salvation through faith in Jesus Christ; in a world riddled with superiority complex, Paul proposes a God who makes no distinction between Jews and Greek. If words can persuade, if cognition is any good, the road to unity (brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity) is a sincere dialogue with an open mind.
