This is because crisis tends to usher in fear, pain, confusion, uncertainty, and an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. To lead others effectively, a leader must command influence, and influence is more powerful than authority. This is because while authority can move followers in the direction they should go, it tends to fall short when the leader is not present. Conversely, leadership influence can inspire and motivate people to follow in the direction that they should go, whether the leader is present or not.
