With no family to help her, Teddy has no choice but to remain in Bird, South Dakota, and find a way to survive. The townspeople are rude, intrusive, and hostile to strangers. They harass Teddy as she struggles to emerge from depression and find a way to make ends meet. In a series of encounters with idiosyncratic residents, some intimidating and others comical, Teddy realizes that her wit and sense of humor are her best coping skills. However, an arson fire, mysterious break-ins, and death threats assail her. Teddy then becomes both victim and witness to a domestic violence incident, which sends her into therapy and out of denial about the abuse she suffered in childhood-and at the hands of her late fiancé. As Teddy transforms her life from powerlessness and anonymity, the town itself is catapulted into a notoriety it is not prepared to handle, and Teddy's most cherished dreams may finally come true amid the hilarious events that follow.
