Dorothy Hewett spent her childhood on a remote wheat and sheep farm in Wickepin, Western Australia. Her adult life in Perth and Sydney was involved in the tumult of politics and writing. As a leading Australian literary figure, Hewett produced 12 collections of poetry, 3 novels, 13 plays, an autobiography, and many articles and short stories. Her impact on Australian writing was recognized in 1986, when she was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to literature. Most recently, the success around Wesley Enoch's new production of Man from Mukinupin at Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney has renewed interest in Hewett's life and work.
