Landmarks in French Literature, by English writer, biographer, Bloomsbury group member, and literary critic Lytton Strachey, was originally published in 1912. The work sets out to summarise French literature in an accurate pithy fashion, characteristic of Lytton's biographies and histories. Organising its history into seven sections: Middle Ages, Renaissance, The Age of Transition, The Age of Louis XIV, the 18th Century, the Romantic Movment, and the Age of Criticism. Strachey presents a series of essays on each particular time frame, going into detail on particular authors, and movements, within each. Presenting a work that would be easily digested by the casual reader, and serious enough to be used as a student's introduction to French literature itself.
