Contributor Bio:  Luther, Martin Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers. These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher. Contributor Bio:  Zimmermann, Karl Roger Cook's photographs have been featured in numerous books, including several written by Karl Zimmermann. Together they authored "The Western Maryland Railway: Fireballs and Black Diamonds," His images appear regularly in such magazines as "Trains," "Railfan & Railroad," "CTC Board," and "Locomotive and Railway Preservation," Karl Zimmermann is a frequent contributor to "Trains" magazine. His stories on trains and travel have also appeared in such publications as the "New York Times," the "Washington Post," the "Los Angeles Times," the "Toronto Globe and Mail," "Railfan & Railroad," "Locomotive & Railway Preservation," and "Travel & Leisure," He is the author of 12 previous books, including "CZ: The Story of the California Zephyr," "The Milwaukee Road Under Wire," "Sante Fe Streamliners: The Chiefs and Their Tribesmen," "Lake Michigan's Railroad Car Ferries," and "Domeliners: Yesterday's Trains of Tomorrow,"Contributor Bio:  Malcolm, Georgiana The German novelist, dramatist, and critic, Gustav Freytag, (1816-1895) was perhaps Germany's most popular author from 1850 to 1870. He portrayed the struggles and triumphs of the rising middle class with engaging realism. As a young boy, Gustav Freytag read voraciously. At Breslau and Berlin he studied Germanic philology, a combination of literary studies, history and linguistics. He taught at the University of Breslau but abandoned a teaching career after several years to devote his energies to writing and scholarship. Freytag's most lasting achievement probably is his cultural history, "Bilder aus der deutschen Vergangenheit" (" Pictures of German Life"), a matchless portrayal of Germany's entire past.
