Mai Lan is just one of many South Vietnamese who had her life ripped away from her by the Communists.

Her parents lost most of their property to the new Communist regime, and they disapprove of Mai's relationship with Le, whose father holds a top position in the Communist Party. But Mai Lan is unable to deny her love for Le, and the two make love just before she leaves the country without his knowledge.

Things get even more complicated when during their bid to find freedom, the ship Mai Lan and her family are traveling on is boarded by pirates. Mai Lan is separated from her family, and it isn't long before she discovers she's pregnant.
