The Broken Eggs also details Harold's enlistment with Army Air Force and the experiences she had as she followed Harold from Ohio, to Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and New Mexico.

By that Christmas and into the year 1942, we knew that Harold would probably need to go to war. What he didn't tell me was that he was talking to the different recruiters on his lunch hour about the rules for enlisting. I never did learn why he didn't tell me about this important part of our life. ... When he finally knew what he wanted to do, he stopped at the draft board in West Toledo on his way home from work, to tell them he was planning to enlist soon in the U. S. Navy. The recruiters at the Navy office promised that he would be assigned to the Navy Band.
