The central theological issue that arises from a study of Matthew 5:17-20 is ?what is the relationship of the Old Covenant law of Moses to the New Covenant Christian who lives under the law of Christ?? This text is THE foundation passage from whence Jesus declares His covenantal fulfillment of the Old Covenant law of Moses. In so doing He affirms the Absolute and unchanging standard of ethical righteousness for entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. The author of this book demonstrates how the contextual exegesis of this text shows how Biblical Law in the Old Testament Scripture is both absolute and covenantal. It is absolute law in the sense that no part of the whole Old Testament shall escape being fulfilled by Christ. As covenant law every ?jot? and tittle? of the law or the prophets will be brought to full realization in the Messianic mission of Christ. This occurs under the New Covenant administration of God?s eternal purpose.
